Cold Call Opener Template (Word for Word)

A direct-reason opener template built on Gong's 300-million-call finding that stating your reason for calling beats asking permission by 2.1x. Fill in the blanks and use it as written.

Most opener templates lead with a permission question: "is now a bad time?" or "got a quick second?" Gong's analysis of 300 million cold calls found that specific habit lowers your odds of booking a meeting by roughly 40%, because it hands the prospect a pre-written exit before you've said anything. Stating your reason for calling directly, with no permission question at all, is about 2.1x more effective.

This template is built around that finding. Fill in the brackets and say it as one continuous line, no pause after your name for a "hello."

The template

"Hi [name], this is [your name] from [your company]. I'm calling because [specific, researched reason tied to their business, a hire, a launch, a problem you know they have]. We help [their role] at companies like [comparable company] with [specific outcome]. Is that something you're dealing with right now, or is that not really on your radar?"

How to fill in the brackets

[specific, researched reason]: This has to be true and specific, not a category. "I noticed you're hiring three AEs this quarter" works. "I wanted to reach out about sales" doesn't.

[comparable company]: Use a real account you've worked with in a similar role or industry. If you don't have one yet, drop this line rather than naming a company that isn't actually comparable.

[specific outcome]: One outcome, stated plainly. Not "improve your sales process," but "cut ramp time for new reps from twelve weeks to six."

What to say next

If they engage, ask one real discovery question tied to what you just said, then listen more than you talk. If they push back immediately, treat the first objection as a reflex, not a verdict, and ask one clarifying question before you let it end the call.

Why this works

The permission-question habit is so common that most prospects have an automatic "no" ready for it. A direct reason breaks that pattern because it isn't the sentence they're braced for. It also respects their time more than it looks like it does: you're telling them exactly why you called instead of making them guess while they decide whether to let you continue.

Reading this template is the easy part. Saying it out loud, at a normal pace, without rushing through it the way nerves make you rush, only gets built through repetition. DialDynamics' live AI practice calls let you run this exact opener against a responsive AI buyer until it stops sounding like something you're reading.
